Disallowed Steelers TD turns tables on gamblers
The Pittsburgh Steelers walked off the field Sunday happy they had won. A lot of bettors in Las Vegas were more concerned about how many points they ended up winning by.

Winners turned into losers and losers ended up winning when a game that should have ended 17-10 or 18-10 went into the record books as the first 11-10 final in NFL history. Though the score made no difference in the NFL standings, it did in the wallets of a lot of bettors on the Las Vegas Strip.

''Anyone who had a bet on the Pittsburgh side and thought they had won weren't too happy,'' John Avello, the director of the sports book at the Wynn resort and casino, said Monday.

A mistake by the officials on the final play of the game between the Steelers and San Diego Chargers didn't alter the outcome, but it did mean bettors who thought they had won money on the game actually lost, while those who thought they had lost ended up winning.

The Steelers were favored by four points, which meant the apparent touchdown scored by safety Troy Polamalu on the last play of the game made the difference between them covering the point spread or not. When the touchdown was disallowed, bettors who thought they had won on a fluke on the last play were left holding worthless tickets.

''On the final play of Sunday's game between the Chargers and Steelers, Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu returned a loose ball 12 yards for a defensive touchdown,'' the league said in a statement. ''After an instant-replay review and crew conference, the on-field ruling of touchdown was incorrectly reversed to no touchdown due to an illegal forward pass by San Diego.

''The incorrect reversal of the on-field ruling of touchdown was acknowledged immediately following the game by referee Scott Green in the pool-report interview with a representative of the media.''

The NFL said it is discussing with its competition committee ''potential administrative improvements for replay that would help to prevent this type of mistake in the future.'' That presumably might include allowing officials to take a second look at controversial plays, something not permitted under the current rules.

Avello said there might have been $10 million bet on the game statewide -- and many times more than that in illegal bets around the country and on offshore Internet betting sites. There was more money bet on the Steelers, he said, especially in parlay bets.

Though the officials later said they made a mistake in calling back the touchdown, the official score remains 11-10. Even if the NFL changes it, Nevada sports books paid off on the final score from Sunday.

Injury report: Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Earnest Graham injured his right ankle Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings, and coach Jon Gruden said his season might be in danger. Graham was hurt on his only carry of the game, limping off the field after landing awkwardly when he was tackled after a three-yard gain in the first quarter.

''His status for the rest of the season is very much in question right now,'' Gruden said. ''I don't have the exact medical terms, but I will say it doesn't look like he'll play any time soon.''

- St. Louis Rams offensive tackle Orlando Pace will be out two to four weeks with a sprained ligament in his right knee suffered Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers. He was hurt when 49ers linebacker Takeo Spikes leg-whipped him in the second quarter.

Also, coach Jim Haslett said running back Steven Jackson will miss his fourth game in five weeks Sunday against the Bears because of a strained muscle in his right thigh.

- New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs had a precautionary MRI exam on his sore right knee, but coach Tom Coughlin said he didn't think the injury was serious. Jacobs ran for 73 yards and two one-yard touchdowns Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens before leaving in the second quarter.

- Tennessee Titans cornerback Eric King suffered a broken forearm Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars , but coach Jeff Fisher said there's a chance he might return this season, so no decision has been made yet about putting him on injured reserve.

Vikes face hearing: Vikings defensive tackles Kevin and Pat Williams will meet with NFL officials this week to appeal their four-game suspensions after testing positive for the diuretic Bumetanide, which is considered a masking agent for steroids.

Appeals will be heard today for New Orleans Saints running back Deuce McAllister and defensive ends Charles Grant and Will Smith. All have been suspended for four games.

The NFL estimates six to eight players have been identified as testing positive for Bumetanide. It is present in an over-the-counter weight-loss pill the players took.

There is no indication when the NFL's decision will be announced.
