Your Browns questions answered

Got a Browns question? Send it in. Submit your question to cleveland.com/heytony, and Plain Dealer Browns beat writer Tony Grossi will choose several to answer each Sunday here in the sports section. All of Tony's answers are archived online.

Q: Hey, Tony: I was over looking at NFL.com for the complete draft order, and I noticed something called a "compensatory selection." Can you explain what that is, who gets them and why the Browns have none? - Mike Hollingsworth, Euclid.

A: Hey, Mike: Compensatory picks are awarded by the NFL to teams who suffered greater losses than gains in free agency the previous season. The formula for awarding the picks is incomprehensible to even people in the league. Essentially, the more high-priced free agents you lose, the higher a compensatory pick you should expect to receive, beginning with the third round. The Browns have only received one compensatory pick in the history of this process - a seventh-rounder - because they always sign more free agents than they lose.

Q: Hey, Tony: It seemed like Eric Mangini rounded out his coaching staff weeks ago. But after looking at the Browns' Web site, there is no one listed as wide receivers coach, what gives? - Randy Ziemnik, Parma.

A: Hey, Randy: Mangini has yet to name a receivers coach. I meant to ask him about it at the NFL owners meetings last month, but it slipped my mind during the one time the Browns coach made himself available to reporters. He may promote George McDonald from offensive quality control.
