John Mitchell is joining an elite group that includes Jesse Owens, Joe Louis, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron and Joe Namath.
The Steelers assistant head coach/defensive line coach learned last week that he will be inducted into the state of Alabama's Sports Hall of Fame in May.
"He was a great Football player at the University of Alabama," said Bill Miller, the marketing director for the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame Museum. "Well respected not only as a player but a coach, too."
Mitchell played at Alabama in 1971-72 and the Mobile native became the school's first African-American to earn All-American honors in Football. He was also the first African-American to serve as a captain of the Football team.
A defensive end, Mitchell had 125 tackles, including 12 for losses, eight sacks and five forced fumbles in two seasons with the Crimson Tide. In the 24 games he started, Alabama went 21-3 and won a pair of SEC championships.
Mitchell also joins his coach, the legendary Paul "Bear" Bryant, in Alabama's Sports Hall of Fame as well as former Steelers wide receiver John Stallworth.
