The Steelers placed long snapper Greg Warren on injured reserve with a torn ACL and signed rookie Jared Retkofsky of TCU to replace him. They also added a punter to their practice squad, Ricky Schmitt from Shepherd College, in case Mitch Berger (hamstring) cannot punt.
PLAYER NOTES
--RB Willie Parker practiced on Wednesday and it appears he will play Monday in Washington. Parker, who topped 100 yards in each of his first two games, sprained the MCL in the third game and has not played since.
--QB Ben Roethlisberger needs 304 yards to pass Kordell Stewart into second place on the team's passing list. He has 13,025 yards.
--PK Jeff Reed, who has a new snapper this week, is a perfect 10-for-10 on field-goal tries and needs two to move into second place on the team's career list. He has 145 field goals.
--WR Hines Ward has caught a pass in 153 consecutive games, a team record and the third-highest active streak behind Marvin Harrison at 182 and Terrell Owens at 175.
--RB Mewelde Moore, who will step aside if Willie Parker is healthy, has three of the team's four longest runs from scrimmage of 32, 27 and 24 yards. Parker has one of 32.
GAME PLAN: The Steelers believe they can throw the ball against a defense that has only 10 sacks this season, but they'll try to get their ground game going first in a notoriously noisy stadium. The silent snap count did not work so well for them in Philadelphia earlier. The Redskins boast the league's leading rusher but the Steelers have had no problem stopping the run this season and hope to put some heat on Jason Campbell, who has not thrown an interception but has been sacked 16 times.
MATCHUPS TO WATCH: Redskins RB Clinton Portis, the NFL's leading rusher, vs. the NFL's third-best run defense. The Steelers held the Giants' vaunted running game under 100 yards.
Steelers Pro Bowl OLB James Harrison vs. Redskins five-time Pro Bowl LT Chris Samuels. Harrison has 8.5 sacks, Samuels a sore knee.
Steelers Pro Bowl SS Troy Polamalu vs. Redskins TE Chris Cooley, the team's second-leading receiver with 40 receptions.
INJURY IMPACT: LT Marvel Smith is still out with back spasms, although he may try to practice later this week. He's missed the past two games and Max Starks replaced him ... FS Ryan Clark (dislocated shoulder) is out and will be replaced by Tyrone Carter, who is not as fast nor as savvy ... CB Bryant McFadden (forearm) is out, replaced by Deshea Townsend ... RB Willie Parker may return since leaving the third game with a sprained MCL ... QB Ben Roethlisberger was held out of practice with a sore shoulder Wednesday but will play ... LB LaMarr Woodley (calf) did not practice Wednesday but should play, as will NT Casey Hampton (toe).
