REPORT CARD VS. RAVENS
PASSING OFFENSE: B -- Considering the opposing defense, the Steelers had a nice game throwing the ball. Ben Roethlisberger completed 22 of 40 for 246 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. He was sacked three times. On the winning 92-yard drive that began at the Pittsburgh 8-yard line, he completed seven of 11 for 89 yards with a spike. Several of his passes were dropped earlier.
RUSHING OFFENSE: C-minus -- There was never any consistency. Willie Parker ran 14 times to lead Pittsburgh with 47 yards, and Roethlisberger was next with 21 on four scrambles. The Steelers had 91 yards on 27 carries, but it came against one of the best defenses in the league.
PASS DEFENSE: A -- Rookie QB Joe Flacco completed only 11 of 28 passes, and he was intercepted twice and sacked twice. He had no touchdowns, and his passer rating was a mere 22.2. The Steelers did not sack him a lot but had good pressure on him most of the game.
RUSH DEFENSE: B -- The Ravens did better than most with 112 yards on 31 carries. Le'Ron McClain led them with 87 yards on 23 tries. It became obvious early that Baltimore wanted to run in what everyone knew would be a tight, low-scoring game, so the Ravens committed to it but never broke though with a big gainer; the long was 10 by McClain.
SPECIAL TEAMS: D -- Jeff Reed lifted the grade by making both of his field-goal tries, otherwise it was nearly a disaster. The Steelers allowed Ravens return man Jim Leonhard to pick up a bouncing punt they had surrounded and return it 39 yards. Santonio Holmes muffed a punt that a teammate recovered. Reed was penalized 15 yards after kicking the PAT to give Baltimore a shot in the closing seconds with better field position. P Mitch Berger had a 27.0-yard net on six boots. The Steelers had no good returns.
COACHING: B-plus -- Mike Tomlin and his staff stuck with what they believed, then cut loose behind Roethlisberger and the passing game in the final, 92-yard winning drive. They did not blitz Flacco much, preferring to remain in coverage and stop the run -- and it worked. The most interesting coaching decision of the day would have occurred had Holmes been ruled down at the 1 on the winning touchdown: Would Tomlin had gone for the win on fourth down, or kick and go to overtime?
