The Schein 9 focuses on those around the league under major pressure to perform in the second half:
1. Wade Phillips
The hot seat was engulfed in flames before the season ever started. Phillips had to actually take over as the defensive play caller with the inept play on defense. The offensive line has grossly underachieved. Phillips has had to deal with injuries to key players (Tony Romo, Terrence Newman, Felix Jones), suspensions, a wild cast of characters, and a crazy owner. It all doesn't matter. If Dallas doesn't rebound and go DEEP in the playoffs, Wade Phillips, fair or unfair, is a goner.

2. Norv Turner
When you talk to football people and ask them at the midway point in the season to pick the winner of the AFC West, most still believe it can be the San Diego. It's a healthy combination of the division being ultra-weak and the untapped potential this year for Turner's Chargers. San Diego is at 3-5. They just fired the defensive coordinator. Even sans Shawne Merriman, this team still oozes talent and boasts stars across the board. There is absolutely no excuse with Phillip Rivers, LaDainian Tomlinson, Antonio Gates, Antonio Cromartie, Luis Castillo, etc. if San Diego doesn't make a run to the playoffs in a very down year for the AFC. It's Turner's job to get them there. Chargers fans are still livid the team wrongly let Marty Schottenheimer go. Anything less than the playoffs will be totally unacceptable. And frankly, this team should be a Super Bowl contender.
3. Al Davis
Even by the low standards for sanity and management they've established in Oakland, they are hitting an all-time low. How in the world do you trade a second-round pick for DeAngelo Hall and cut him eight games into his Raider career? You pay him $8 million for eight games? That's irresponsible and irrational all the way around. I feel terrible for the die-hard fans that comprise Raider Nation. There is currently a commitment to be totally clueless and irrational. The Lane Kiffin fiasco was embarrassing enough. The league might have to step in.
4. Brian Urlacher
The Bears defense has been awful this year. Urlacher will always get the bulk of the credit and his fair share of the blame. Urlacher looks a step off in the first half. He doesn't have a pick, sack, or forced fumble. With Kyle Orton out, the Bears defense needs to look like the Bears defense. Brian Urlacher needs to resemble the Hall of Famer we are accustomed to seeing.
5. Fred Taylor
Last year, he finally made the Pro Bowl after a brilliant career where he never got the proper recognition. This season, Freddie T hasn't gotten started yet. The Jags are underachieving at 3-5. Taylor has only racked up 278 yards on a lowly 3.27 yards per carry. For the Jaguars to get back to their form from a year ago they need Taylor to channel the skill sets he's exhibited throughout his career. In addition to his play, there are league-wide whispers about locker room issues in Jacksonville. Taylor is a team leader who must step forward.
6. Romeo Crennel
The Browns were the preseason darlings of a lot of pundits (not me for the record). Heck, even the league bought in, putting the Browns on national television five times. Cleveland has underachieved at 3-5. Crennel finally pulled the trigger on the quarterback change, showing desperation by moving to Brady Quinn. Will Quinn help Braylon Edwards finally catch the ball? Will Quinn help the right side of the line? Will Quinn help the pass defense?
I'm not saying I don't like Brady Quinn. But the 3-5 record is not simply because of Derek Anderson. But the timing of the move showed desperation. With the young, hometown, golden boy now at quarterback, there is no turning back. Romeo's job depends on it.
7. Brett Favre
We've seen a mixed bag from Favre in the first half of the season. He was explosive against Arizona. Favre was efficient in the huge win in Buffalo. But Favre hurt the cause against New England, Buffalo, and San Diego. The Jets are now tied for first in the AFC East with New England and Buffalo. There is a legit opportunity to make the playoffs for New York. The bar was raised when the Jets traded for Favre. It's even higher now. Favre can't blow it.
8. Brad Childress
The Vikings came into this season loaded with expectations. I never bought in, but the owner did. The Vikings are 4-4. I don't believe they are going to take a step forward. And 8-8 won't be considered acceptable. And Childress' hand-picked quarterback Tarvaris Jackson is glued to the pine.
9. Ben Roethlisberger
When I write that Roethlisberger is on the hot seat for the second half, I am not saying his job is in jeopardy. But Ben has rightly come under heavy scrutiny for holding onto the ball too long and taking too many sacks. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin was very complimentary of Byron Leftwich in this area after his relief performance on Monday night after Roethlisberger got hurt. It is incumbent on Roethlisberger not to be a hero and stay out of action until he is fully healthy. Tomlin cannot rush him back. When Ben is right he's a top five quarterback in this league
